Moon calendars by month
What are the phases of the Moon?
The Moon goes from new to full and back in about 29.5 days, a synodic month. At new moon it sits between the Earth and the Sun and its lit side faces away; at first quarter half its disc is lit on the right (from the Northern Hemisphere); at full moon it is opposite the Sun and fully lit; at last quarter the left half is lit. The days between are crescents and gibbous moons. Today’s phase, with moonrise and moonset.
How is this calendar calculated?
Each principal phase is the exact moment the Moon’s ecliptic longitude is 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees from the Sun’s, found from NASA/JPL DE440s orbital data and shown in your time zone, so a phase near midnight can fall on a different date than in other countries. Daily illumination is calculated at local noon. How the calculations work.
