What your chart shows you.

Start with your Big Three, then go as deep as you like, through to relationship and timeline views. Every reading points back to a placement you can see on your chart, and tradition is always labelled as tradition.

The Moon is in Aries, full moon and 97% illuminated. The Sun is in Libra. These are sidereal (Lahiri) positions computed for 27 October at 12:52 UTC from NASA/JPL DE440s orbital data, by the same engine that will place your own planets. Every chart and horoscope on Kendraya starts from positions like these, then adds traditional interpretation, labelled as such.

Three ways in, one calculated sky.

Vedic astrology chart or Western? Both, kept apart.

The planets are where they are. What differs is the zodiac you measure them against. Kendraya calculates both from the same positions and labels every reading so you always know which one you are looking at. Nothing is blended.

The Vedic view is the default because nakshatras and Vimshottari periods only exist there. Switch at any time inside your chart.

The planets do not move between the two views. Only the ring does, by today’s Lahiri ayanamsa of 24°14′. Bodies marked with a dot sit in a different sign depending on the view.

How to read your birth chart, in five looks.

A birth chart is read from the inside out: first the three placements that describe you most directly, then where each planet sits, then the timing layers Vedic astrology adds. Kendraya is a rising sign calculator, a Moon sign calculator and a houses calculator in one, so every step below is already on your wheel.

Every term explained in the glossary
  1. Sun, Moon and rising sign

The Sun sign is where the Sun stood by date of birth. The Moon sign is where the Moon stood, which needs the time. The rising sign (ascendant) is the sign on the eastern horizon at your birthplace, which needs time and place. Together they are the “big three”.

  2. The houses

Twelve houses start from the rising sign and describe areas of life, from self and voice to home, work and partnership. Kendraya defaults to whole-sign houses: each house is one full sign.

  3. The planets and the nodes

Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn each sit in a sign and a house, sometimes retrograde. Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes, are calculated points that always face each other.

  4. The Moon’s nakshatra

In the Vedic view the sidereal zodiac is split into 27 lunar mansions. The one holding your Moon names your nakshatra and its quarter, and sets the start of your periods.

  5. Vimshottari dasha periods

A 120-year cycle of nine planetary periods, each with sub-periods and real dates. The one you are in now is the chapter to read first.

Questions people ask before their first chart.

What is a birth chart?

A birth chart (also called a natal chart) is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets stood, as seen from the Earth, at the moment you were born, set against the horizon of your birthplace. Kendraya Engine calculates those positions from NASA/JPL DE440s orbital data, stored on Kendraya’s own server, and then Kendraya shows what astrology has traditionally read into each placement, labelled as interpretation rather than fact.

What do I need to calculate my birth chart?

Three details: your birth date, the local clock time on your birth record, and the town or city where you were born. The time and place fix your rising sign and houses. If you do not know your time, tick the box and Kendraya still calculates your Sun, Moon and planets from a noon reference, marking anything that could change during the day.

What is the difference between a Vedic and a Western birth chart?

Both use the same planetary positions but measure them against different zodiacs. The Vedic (sidereal) zodiac is anchored to the fixed stars, using the Lahiri ayanamsa here; the Western (tropical) zodiac is anchored to the March equinox. They currently differ by about 24 degrees, so a planet can sit in a different sign in each view. Kendraya shows both and never mixes them.

What is my Moon sign, and why does it matter in Vedic astrology?

Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your birth. Vedic astrology treats it as the centre of the emotional life and uses it, together with the Moon's nakshatra, to calculate your Vimshottari dasha periods. Kendraya reads it from your exact birth moment, not from a table of dates.

What is a nakshatra or Moon mansion?

The sidereal zodiac is divided into 27 lunar mansions of 13 degrees 20 minutes each, called nakshatras, and each is split into four quarters (padas). Your birth Moon falls in one of them. Kendraya names it, shows its quarter and traditional ruler, and offers an original reflection on its themes.

What are Vimshottari dasha periods?

Vimshottari is the most widely used Vedic system of planetary periods. It divides a 120-year cycle among nine planetary rulers (Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17), starting from the ruler of your Moon's nakshatra. Kendraya calculates your major periods and their sub-periods with real dates and highlights the one you are in now.

Is astrology scientifically proven?

No. Kendraya calculates astronomical positions from numerical models, with precision limited by the models and birth details. Astrology is a tradition of interpretation and has not been shown to predict personality or events. Everything beyond the positions themselves is offered for reflection and enjoyment, and is labelled that way throughout the site.

Is my birth data private?

Yes. Your birth details are sent to the calculation service in the body of a secure request, used in memory and not stored in any database, and they never appear in a web address. Nothing is saved unless you choose to remember your profile or a journal note in your own browser, and you can clear both at any time. Birth data is never used for advertising.

Is Kendraya really free?

Yes. The birth chart calculator, the daily, weekly and monthly horoscopes and the baby name finder are all free to use today, with no account and no email required. If a paid option is ever added, it will be clearly marked before you use it.

Unsure about a word? The glossary explains every term on the site. This year’s zodiac sign dates are calculated for both zodiacs. The full calculation settings, data sources and accuracy audit are on the how it works page.
