Zodiac sign compatibility

Pick two signs to read how astrology traditionally sees them together. Each pairing is described through the elements, the modalities and how far apart the signs sit, never as a score. Sun signs are one layer; your Moon and Venus signs and the full charts say more.

How do I read the compatibility chart?

Each cell names the angle between the two signs. Signs of the same element are four signs apart (a trine) and are traditionally read as the easiest understanding; signs two apart (a sextile) as friendly; three apart (a square) as lively friction; opposite signs as attraction between complements. Sign compatibility is a traditional lens rather than a verdict: a full comparison looks at both complete birth charts, and no pairing of signs is good or bad on its own.

Same sign
Two people with the same sign share an element and a way of approaching life, so tradition reads the pairing as instantly familiar. The ease of recognition can be a strength, and the shared blind spots are worth noticing together.
Semi-sextile
Signs one apart (a semi-sextile) sit side by side in the zodiac and share neither element nor modality. Tradition reads the pairing as subtle: each person has something the other is still learning, which can make the connection quietly instructive.
Sextile
Signs two apart (a sextile) belong to compatible elements, Fire with Air or Earth with Water. Tradition reads the pairing as friendly and cooperative, with an easy flow that grows stronger when both people put effort into it.
Square
Signs three apart (a square) share a modality but have different elements. Tradition reads the pairing as dynamic: both people tend to want to lead in their own way, and working through the differences can produce real growth.
Trine
Signs four apart (a trine) share the same element. Tradition reads the pairing as naturally harmonious, with similar instincts and values; the gentle reminder is to keep challenging each other as well as agreeing.
Quincunx
Signs five apart (a quincunx) share neither element nor modality and see things from very different angles. Tradition reads the pairing as one of adjustment, where curiosity and patience help each person understand the other.
Opposition
Signs six apart (an opposition) sit across the zodiac from each other and share a modality with complementary elements. Tradition reads the pairing as magnetic and balancing: each person shows the other a side of life they may not lean toward alone.

Beyond Sun signs

Sun-sign compatibility compares only the signs of your birthdays. Astrologers also compare Moon signs for emotional rhythm and Venus signs for affection, and a full comparison uses both birth charts. Find yours with the Moon sign, Venus sign and Big Three calculators.
