Rising sign calculator

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born. Enter your birth date, exact time and town, and I calculate it in both the Western and Vedic zodiacs, with how close your birth time sits to the next sign.

The rising sign changes about every two hours, so it needs your birth time. Without one, I can still show your Sun and Moon.

What is a rising sign?

The ascendant is the exact point of the zodiac crossing the eastern horizon at your birth, seen from your birthplace, and your rising sign is the sign that point falls in. Because the Earth turns, a new sign rises on average every two hours (faster or slower depending on the sign and your latitude), which is why two people born on the same day can have different rising signs. Astrologers read it as the first impression you give and the way you meet new situations, and it sets the order of the twelve houses in your chart.

Do I need an exact birth time?

Yes. The ascendant crosses a whole sign in about two hours on average, so a birth time that is off by half an hour can change the sign if you were born near a boundary. The result shows how many minutes earlier or later your rising sign would change, so you can see how much your recorded time matters. If you do not know your time, the Sun and Moon calculators still work.

Why is my Vedic rising sign different?

Western astrology measures signs from the March equinox (the tropical zodiac); Vedic astrology measures them against the stars (the sidereal zodiac, here with the Lahiri ayanamsa). The two are now about 24 degrees apart, so your Vedic rising sign, called the lagna, is often the sign before your Western one. Both are calculated from the same sky.

How is it calculated?

Positions come from Kendraya Engine, which calculates the apparent sky from NASA/JPL DE440s orbital data and converts your local birth time to Universal Time with historical time-zone rules. The Western result uses the tropical zodiac and the Vedic result the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa. How the calculations work.
