Moon sign calculator

Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. Enter your birth details and I calculate it in both zodiacs, together with your nakshatra, the lunar mansion Vedic astrology reads from the Moon. If you do not know your birth time, I flag the days when the Moon changed sign, which happens on a large share of dates.

What is a Moon sign?

The Moon moves through a whole zodiac sign in about two and a quarter days, much faster than the Sun. Astrologers read its sign as your emotional needs and what helps you feel settled, alongside the Sun sign most horoscopes use. In Vedic astrology the Moon sign, called the rashi, is often given more weight than the Sun sign.

Do I need my birth time?

Often not. The Moon stays in one sign for about 55 hours on average, so on many dates it is in one sign all day; on the dates it changes sign, the result marks it and a birth time settles the answer. Your nakshatra changes about once a day, so it is only shown with a birth time.

What is a nakshatra?

The sidereal zodiac is also divided into 27 lunar mansions of 13 degrees 20 minutes, called nakshatras, each split into four quarters (padas). Your birth Moon falls in one of them, and Vedic astrology uses it to begin the Vimshottari periods of life. The calculator names your nakshatra, its quarter and its traditional ruling planet.

How is it calculated?

Positions come from Kendraya Engine, which calculates the apparent sky from NASA/JPL DE440s orbital data and converts your local birth time to Universal Time with historical time-zone rules. The Western result uses the tropical zodiac and the Vedic result the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa. How the calculations work.
