What are the full moon names?
The month names come from North American folk and almanac tradition; different communities used different names. The Harvest Moon is the full moon nearest the September equinox, which usually falls in September and occasionally in early October. A Blue Moon commonly means the second full moon in a single calendar month, although an older almanac definition uses the third of four full moons in one season.
- Wolf Moon
- Folk and almanac tradition links this name to wolves heard more often during the long midwinter nights.
- Snow Moon
- Almanac tradition names it for the heavy snowfall common in February across much of North America.
- Worm Moon
- Folk tradition connects this name with thawing ground and the reappearance of earthworms and other small creatures in early spring.
- Pink Moon
- Almanac tradition names it after early spring wildflowers, such as creeping phlox, rather than the Moon's colour.
- Flower Moon
- Folk and almanac tradition names it for the abundance of flowers blooming in May.
- Strawberry Moon
- Almanac tradition links this name to the short season when wild strawberries ripen and are gathered.
- Buck Moon
- Folk tradition names it for the time when the antlers of male deer are in full growth.
- Sturgeon Moon
- Almanac tradition connects this name with the late summer abundance of sturgeon in the Great Lakes and other waters.
- Corn Moon
- Folk tradition names it for the corn harvest. In years when it is the full moon nearest the September equinox, it is called the Harvest Moon instead.
- Hunter's Moon
- Almanac tradition gives this name to the full moon after the Harvest Moon, linked to autumn hunting and preparing food stores for winter. When the Harvest Moon falls in October, the Hunter's Moon is in November.
- Beaver Moon
- Folk tradition connects this name with beavers preparing for winter and the season for setting traps before waters froze.
- Cold Moon
- Almanac tradition names it for the long, cold nights around the December solstice.

How are these dates calculated?
A full moon is the instant the Moon is 180 degrees from the Sun in ecliptic longitude, and a new moon the instant they align, calculated from NASA/JPL DE440s orbital data. Times are shown in America/New York, which decides the calendar date, the month name and whether a month has two full moons. How the calculations work.
